Spooky dog tales
Has the approach of Hallowe'en got you in the mood for some tales of the ghostly kind?
Here are a couple of spooky canine stories, taken from 'Haunting Hounds' by Karen Bush and Claire Colvin (£6.99), to get you in the spirit...
The Leeds Castle lifesaver
Leeds Castle in Kent is said to be the most beautiful haunted castle in England; the resident ghost is a Curly Coated Retriever that appears and disappears as it pleases, by passing through closed doors or fading into walls. Over the years it has come to be associated with a death or misfortune befalling a member of the family, but the ghost has also been responsible for saving the life of one person.
Many years ago a woman sitting by a window saw the dog do its walking through walls trick, and unable to believe her eyes, stood up and went over to investigate. Just seconds after moving away from the window, it collapsed. Had she remained seated she would almost certainly have been killed.
The Devils Den Dog
Beware of the ghostly dog with burning eyes who has made his lair beneath the Long Barrow in Clatford Bottom in Wiltshire, and guards his long dead master who lies in the Neolithic burial chamber. The gooseflesh-inducing sound of his baying has also been heard echoing across the valley at night.
Should you feel like keeping on his right side and doing something nice for him, it is said that if you fill the dimples on top of the capstone with water, the hound will drink from them during the night.
