Joe Queenan on people who shop for books online:

“Doing so, by refusing to patronized bookstores and libraries, by refusing to expose themselves to the music of chance, they have purged all the authentic, nonelectronic magic and mystery from their lives. They have rolled over and surrendered to the machines. This may be convenient, but that’s all it is. All technology is corporate… Certain things are perfect the way they are and need no improvement. The sky, the Pacific Ocean, and the “Goldberg Variations" all fit this bill, and so do books.”

Ah, the music of chance.
