Starless Night

By Alice Jackson Sanders copyright 9/11/2019
Murky, charcoal sky holds no light. No moon nor stars to make it bright.
Forest friends, though weary, find no rest. Even small bird has left her soft nest.
Suddenly, comes thumping of delicate hoof beats. Sweet bird ceases melancholy tweets.
From edge of forest, as if from an enchanted dream, mesmeric stallion strolls and sits beside woodland stream.
Silver white is he, with one twined platinum horn.
Gazing about, he wonders, why creatures are forlorn.
From his horn, hangs lantern shaped like a church. Atop this horn, little bird decides to perch.
Fawn, rabbit and wolf gather near, intrigued with lantern's glow. Their eyes light up, as from church lantern, tiny stars begin to flow.
Up, up and around, stars are flying, filling Heavens with twinkling light. Around stream, forest friends and mystical visitor settle down for a peaceful night.
