The Borzoi,(also known as Russian Wolfhound).
Tsar Nicholas of Russia presented a Borzoi to Queen Alexandra, whom she called Alix. This started a trend amongst the fashion conscious of the day, although the breeds history dates back to 1260 A.D.
Borzoi is an old Russian word for "fast".
His owner told me they are quite endangered, as their numbers are very low and few people are breeding them now. I wish I had been quick enough to get a photo of him standing, as Borzois have the most beautiful deep chest. This lovely dog was so placid, his owner was browsing a small gallery, with his hound laid flat out on the carpet, quite happy for people to step over and round him. Do you remember Walt Disney's 1955 film "Lady and the tramp?", "Boris" was a Borzoi.
