The History of Wales

Penrhyn Quarry Railroad, one of the oldest narrow gauge railways in the world.
On 2nd September 1800, encouraged by the success of the one mile long Llandegai Tramway, built in 1798 to connect Lord Penrhyn's slate quarries at Bethesda to a local flint mill that ground clay and chert into flints, the owners of the quarry started construction of the Penrhyn Quarry Railway, connecting the quarry to the sea at Porth Penrhyn. However, by 1874 the railroad was no longer able to keep up with the output of the quarry and a steam locomotive was introduced. It was closed in 1962.
