The Official Crow, Raven & Other Corvids Fan Page

What is the most intelligent animal species?
If you thought it was chimpanzees you would be wrong. They are relegated to #3.
Number 1, of course, are dolphins. However, number 2 are Ravens and their cousins the crows.
Native American folklore, ravens are known as tricksters. I can testify to this, having been witness to the playful nature of several of these feathered tricksters on one day. While walking our dog in the desert one of them flew slightly ahead of Chewy while his friend swooped in behind our dog surprising the hell out of him. They did this several times and were obviously have fun with our dog.
Ravens are only bird that creates tools to extract food sources from hard-to-reach spaces. They will take nuts and other shelled sources of food out into the middle of a road, allowing cars to crack them open, before flying in to fetch their meal. They mostly nest in rural areas where their nestlings are watched over by the community. I recently noticed a noisy flock of crows surrounding and harassing a lonely hawk flying overhead, dissuading the bird from going near their nests. They even recognize human faces.
There are countless stories on the Internet of crows bringing gifts and trinkets to humans who feed them.
Ravens and crows are also known for holding grudges against people who cheat them. Quite surprisingly they have been know to enact “funerals” over dead members of their species, from which they pick up social information.
Why then are crows always portrayed as villains in films such as Disney's "Maleficent" and in folklore as "bearers of bad tidings"?My guess, because they are black.
I, for one, have a great admiration of our black-feather friends.
