S R Goodman 'Three Hares of Devon'

Dedicated to dear Olivia Maya…
"Gather dear ones, your ears a-listen
Of the Three Hares of Devon,
Who sought three gifts a-glisten
For their lady; our lady of heaven.
For days three, rain had lashed the land,
A dreary grey, a mournful stand.
The sun withheld its golden gaze,
Morbius creased world in misty haze.
O saddened lady, our Lady in heaven,
Whispered in voice, soft and low,
"Sun departed, torn veil's blow",
Sighed she, to Three Hares of Devon.
"Our Lady, saddened Lady in heaven,
Needs comfort for mourn of sun.
Act we must, not leave love undone
We servants three; Three Hares of Devon."
The first hare sped, a furry flash,
Through crashing waves, a watery dash.
He dived and searched with keenest eye,
And found treasure dropped from sky.
"I'll return with sea glass, ocean made,
A shimmering trove, shone midst shade."
The second hare, leapt high, so high,
Above the clouds, where colours lie.
A vibrant arc, a promise left bright,
He captured it in new morn's light.
"I'll ride back reined rainbow so grand;
Illumined bridge of dear divine's hand."
The third hare burrowed, quick and deep,
Where secrets of the earth might sleep.
Found roost nest, with treasures three,
Inspiring symbol, earth's fecundity.
"I'll offer these eggs as new life's prize,
A claimed renewal, 'neath clouded skies."
And our Lady, disconsolate heart sown,
Eyes a-tear, of dear hare's devotion shown.
She raised sea glass aloft, a rainbow shone,
And saw now eggs hued, in new coloured tone.
Spring's redemptive gift, forever bright,
For our lady; now joyful Lady of heaven.
World partakes repast of risen sun's sight,
With thanks to these, these Three Hares of Devon."
