A Samhain Tale: Hecate & the Crossroads of Choice

Posted on:   Oct 27, 2013 @ 12:04

The wheel of the year turns, the days become shorter, colder, and we gather ourselves ever deeper inwards. Samhain is upon us, the witches’ new year, a time when the veil between the worlds is thinnest, and the Dark Goddess Hecate beckons us to Her crossroads.
On Samhain eve, in the pitch blackness of deep night, She calls to us. Never before has Her voice been so loud, so urgent.  For She speaks to us not only in our dreams and ritual magic, but also in the stark language of wildly, erratic weather patterns, dying oceans and barren lands; and in the cold despair and hungry hopes of our own warm, beating hearts.
Hecate is waiting for us; two roads intersect diagonally at Her feet, stretching backwards and forwards into the determinate past and indefinite future.
To the left – a neglected path, overgrown with the luscious, fecundity of the wild world; that recalls the feral, innocence of childhood and the witchy, sensual powers of our priestess selves.   To the right – a paved over surface, obscuring any trace of the good, green earth under an unforgiving, tar black sheen; that lays bare the tear in our human psyche from the natural world and our true essence, and echoes with the keening pain of our battered souls and broken hearts.
Hecate whispers in our ears, “You stand at my crossroads, with the ways of human living and dreaming set before you. One road leads to your destruction, the other to your blossoming.  The way forward is the path between, my middle path that calls you to become big enough, wise enough and powerful enough to embrace the light and the shadow, and the pain and the power, of your life story and human nature.
The Great Turning is upon us, and humanity balances precariously on an evolutionary edge. By your choices will your destiny, and that of your Earth home, be determined. Time is running out. Do not turn away. Do not go back to sleep.”
And when our crossroads vision is done, the real magic begins. Because we choose with our every thought, every word, every action which path our lives serve, and what kind of a world we want to create. Never have the stakes been higher; life as we know it hangs in the balance. To change our world, we must start with ourselves.
