The Rule of Three
The Rule of Three is a tenet held by some Witches, Wiccans and Pagans. It states that whatever energy a person puts out into the world - whether that energy be positive or negative - it will be returned to that person three times.
Some subscribe to a variant of this law in which return is not necessarily threefold, it's simply reciprocal.
The Rule of Three often is described as karma, but this is not strictly accurate. Both concepts describe the process of cause and effect and often encourage us to act in a good way.
The concept of karma, according to the scriptures of Buddhism, Hinduism and other eastern belief systems, does not operate on a system of three-fold return. Nor does karma contain the concepts of "good" and "evil" - rather, actions are understood as the entire cycle of cause and effect.
The Rule of Three is most literally seen as a reward or punishment tied to a person's actions, particularly when it comes to working magic. Many view the Rule of Three as an over-elaboration on the Wiccan Rede, and others believe that it is a modern innovation based upon Christian morality.
