👑 The Queen of Welsh Resorts, Llandudno, Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿
Once a small fishing and copper mining town nestled on the lower slopes of the Great Orme, the seaside resort of Llandudno as we know it today originates from 1846, when plans drawn were up for the landowner Lord Edward Mostyn MP, who recognised a wealth-making scheme for a bathing resort here on the Gloddaeth Estate.
Development leaseholds for 955 acres of gridded parcels of land, covering the then Morfa Rhianedd salt marsh, were auctioned off in August 1849, these grids still visible in the town’s layout today. Many of the hotels date from this time, all of which had to follow the strict design controls laid out by Mostyn and his appointed architects. St George's Hotel dates from 1854, making it the oldest building on the Promenade, and claimed to be the town’s first luxury hotel. The Grand Hotel with its 156 bedrooms, opened in 1902, and at the time was the largest hotel in Wales.
With the arrival of the railway and the building of the original pier in 1858, along with the extensive tram system connecting Rhos-on-sea and later Colwyn Bay, Llandudno was transformed into the highly popular Victorian seaside holiday resort.
