Asked (by a fan) Ricky Gervais for a retweet so he and his sister could get a dog, Gervais helped out but with one condition. The pooch had to be a rescue. That then turned into the comedian speaking his mind on a (sadly) common problem facing companion animals: abandonment and an overcrowded shelter system.
Gervais wrote, “How can anyone abandon a beautifully loyal dog? It’s not an accessory. It’s your best fucking friend. It makes me so sad & angry.”
With between six and eight million dogs and cats entering shelters in the USA alone each year, it seems that a lot of people do treat their furry family members as disposable. Even more sadly, only half of those animals make it out of the shelters alive.
In order to help combat the dreadful situation, Gervais wrote further on the subject, “Pop into an animal rescue centre today. Even if you have no intention of taking a little critter home, get a free cuddle & donate a fiver

Whether it’s animal testing, rabies vaccinations or adoption, “The Office” star has long been an animal advocate. We hope his over four million followers on twitter are listening to his very good advice.1 Co
