Bull Terrier Books
These below are actually children's books, but I'm a sucker for books about Bullies so had to read them. I've not yet got hold of a copy of The Golden Boy but it is in my favourite searches on Ebay! All by Beverly and Chris Wood
First Dogstar
Juneau, Alaska, 1933. This is where 13-year-old Jeff Beacon gets
stranded when his parents take him on a cruise to help him get over the
death of his beloved dog, Buddy. The problem: Jeff is a millennium kid,
with a laptop computer and hightop sneakers. Why has he been transported
to the Alaskan frontier? And how can he find his way home? Jeff must
answer these questions quickly — and his only help is the town's bull
terrier, Patsy Ann. With Patsy Ann as his guide, Jeff befriends the
gruff Captain of the DogStar and an adventurous girl named Rose, and
uncovers a dangerous secret. When the Captain, Rose, and Jeff hatch a
plan to set things right in Juneau, Jeff must make a surprising choice
about going home — and Patsy Ann holds the key.
A time-travel adventure story, DogStar
contains plenty of fast-paced action involving counterfeit money,
sunken ships, and lost treasure. But its theme is more serious.
Returning to the present helps Jeff discover the true treasure — his
ability to keep Buddy alive in his heart forever.
Jack's Knife
Fifteen-year-old Jackson has big dreams fueled by long talks with his
elderly next-door neighbor, Al McMann. At 91, McMann has many stories
about policing the northwest as a young man. But their friendship
worries Jackson's single mom, who finds it "unhealthy." When she insists
that Jack break off the friendship and sign up for community baseball
instead, he is hurt and angry. When a stray dog turns up, his mother
demands they call animal control, and Jack ends up dodging the
dogcatcher with his new friend. Ducking through a fence, he stumbles
into an unfamiliar place — Juneau, Alaska in the mid-1930s, where he’s
soon involved with a fledgling law-enforcement team that just might need
his help. This new young adult novel from the husband-and-wife team of
Chris and Beverley Wood blends a compelling story of a troubled teen and
his canine best friend with an exciting time-travel adventure.
The Golden Boy
Struggling with the changes in his family and unhappy about a looming
vacation, Tomi is an angry, awkward 13-year-old boy — a boy who suddenly
finds himself in Juneau, Alaska, in 1939, befriended by Patsy Ann, the
city's mysterious dog! The world is on the brink of war, and Tomi's
Japanese name and features draw the attention of Avery Nichols, an
ambitious FBI agent. Tomi’s mechanical skills and an encounter with a
priceless but broken golden puppet may jumpstart his journey home — if,
that is, he can elude Agent Nichols for long enough. The Golden Boy’s combination of adventure, fantasy, and historical fiction is perfect for reluctant readers.
