This is Temple Row, the row of properties that once lined the eastern edge of the churchyard of St Giles. The building in the background of this photograph is Soames’s brewery.

Historically it was a residential area squeezed in the 'backs' of Yorke Street because in the 19th century the churchwardens regularly complained about the locals hanging out their clothes on the churchyard railings to dry.

Temple Row was demolished in 1967 to allow greater flow of traffic along Yorke Street, which was then an A road passing through the town centre. Its demolition passed with barely a public comment at the time. Now with by-passes and St Giles’s Way, it is one of the quieter roads in town.
