The Ladies of Llangollen

This is the story of two aristocratic ladies who eloped together to Wales in 1778. Their names were Lady Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby. They took a 5 bedroom cottage in Llangollen renamed it Plas Newydd and indulged their passion for old carved wood by embellishing the house both in and externally. They lived there together for over 50 years until Eleanors death in 1829 followed by Sarah in 1831.
