It’s no secret that there is growing concern in the UK population around the ingredients, local sourcing and health benefits of our food.
This mindfulness has been reflected into our doggy diets too. Long gone are the days of selecting a random tin of dog food from the supermarket shelf and thinking “that’ll do.”
We dog owners are now so much more concerned with what our beloved pooches are tucking into. This shift has driven the up-tick in popularity of raw-fed diets, tailor-made and subscription food delivery services.
If you, like many of our Wooflinks followers, are concerned with your dog’s health, what better way to keep tabs on their nutrition than with some homemade healthy treats?
Our top priority is healthy, happy pups, but to be kind to your pocket too, so we have carefully selected recipes that contain the ingredients that you are likely to have at home.
Peanut Butter and Sweet Potato Biscuits
What you’ll need:
- 500g flour (you can use gluten or grain free flour if you wish)
- 2 Eggs
- 50g of baked sweet potato
- 2 tbsp of peanut butter
- Baking paper
- Water (you could use chicken or beef bone broth instead to add extra flavour and nutrients)
What you need to do:
- Mix the eggs, flour, sweet potato, and peanut butter in a large mixing bowl
- Add a splash of water where needed to get the dough to knead. Be careful not to let your dough get too wet, it needs to be dry and stiff!
- Roll out the dough to about half an inch thick using a rolling pin. Cut them with a biscuit cutter
- Bake in oven for about 40 minutes at about 180ºC until hard.
- Leave until completely cool before serving to your pup.
These will keep in an air-tight container for up to 2 weeks and are also suitable for freezing.
Cheddar Treats
What you’ll need:
- 200g flour
- 200g grated cheddar cheese
- 1 tablespoon softened butter
- 70ml whole milk
What you need to do:
- Preheat your oven to 180ºC
- Combine the flour and the cheese first, and then add the butter until combined.
- Gradually add the milk until just moistened – ensure it’s not too wet!
- Knead the mixture on a lightly floured surface around 8-10 times
- Roll the dough to approximately 12 x 9 inch and cut into strips before placing onto ungreased baking sheets
- Bake at 180°C for 15 minutes and then let stand in the oven with the door slightly opened until cool before serving
Store in an airtight container for up to a week.
Blueberry and Yoghurt Frozen Treats
What you need:
- 120g Greek yoghurt
- 100ml water
- Punnet of blueberries
What you need to do:
- Add the yoghurt and water into a mixing bowl and mix together to make the base. You can add more yoghurt and reduce the amount of water if you would like creamier or more calorific treat.
- Pour the yoghurt/water mixture into ice trays
- Add blueberries to each of the wells until the well is almost filled, leave a little room for the treat to expand in the freezer.
- Pop in the freezer until frozen solid
There you have it… 3 delightful, DIY doggy treats for your fur baby.
