Cool Bookish Places: Stony Island Arts Bank

Check this place out. Crazy gorgeous, right?

It’s the new Stony Island Arts Bank, and it just opened on the South Side of Chicago. An artist bought the old Building and Loan Bank from the city for a dollar and renovated it, turning it into an arts center and archive for local culture and history.

“The radically restored building will serve as a space for neighborhood residents to preserve, access, reimagine and share their heritage – and a destination for artists, scholars, curators, and collectors to research and engage with South Side history.” –Rebuild Foundation

The building will host art exhibits and a reference library, as well as space for cultural events. It’s connected with the Rebuild Foundation, which has been working with “artists, architects, developers, educators, community activists, and residents” in Chicago neighborhoods for the last five years.

Tours of the renovated building are free and open to the public, and there is a rotating calendar of events and exhibitions. Check it out next time you’re in Chicago!
