The New York Public Library's flagship building on Fifth Avenue is undergoing a $300 million renovation, courtesy of the London-based architect Foster + Partners.
Today, the first renderings of what the refit might look like were released. The most spectacular part of the plans are a multi-level huge atrium facing Bryant Park. According to a report in The New York Times, the refit will create a space of approx 100,000 square feet, making it the largest indoor public space in Manhattan. The main reading room on the third floor will remain untouched.
The plans have yet to be approved by city agencies. Construction is slated to begin in summer 2013, and is expected to run until 2018.
