Tour the Beautiful, Historic Rizzoli Bookstore Before It Moves
Photos by Driely S. for Racked
In 1985, the Rizzoli bookstore relocated to 31 West 57th Street, around the corner from the original location it was forced to vacate after 21 years. Unfortunately, lightening struck twice: the developers of the building have plansto demolish it and turn it into a luxury highrise.
Before it was Rizzoli, the 57th Street address was home to the Sohmer Piano Company, which is why you'll find dramatic vaulted ceilings and statues of cherubs playing harps. (When it relocated the first time, original fixtures were integrated into the new location.)
So far, all that's been confirmed is that Rizzoli will indeed move, but a new home hasn't been found as of yet. In the meantime, marvel in its beauty in the photos after the jump. Or better yet, stop by in person before it's gone.
