The Jack Russel Terrier

Breed Standard for the “ JRish” Terrier .
1. The dog must have some of (but not all) the physical characteristics of a Jack Russell Terrier (as set out in that breed’s description) in the view of a knowledgeable independent person.
2. Coat – yes, the dog must have a coat, ranging in length from stubble to a long shaggy mat or a combination of these.
3. Colour – colours must be either various shades of brown and/or black and white either in solid colours or patches. Colours such as green are not acceptable unless the result of rolling in horse manure or similar substance.
4. Height – should range from 6 – 36 inches measured to the top of the shoulder. The dog must believe it is at least 6 times the size it actually is.
5. Body shape – body shape can range from small barrel to whippet–like and need not be in proportion to the legs.
6. Legs – preferably one on each corner, but not essential.
7. Ears – ears may be folded forward over the head or erect or a combination of these. Size of ears may vary from small to “how does it keep it’s feet on the ground when running?”
8. Eyes – a pair is desirable, but not essential. Must be expressive, alert and, most importantly, look at the owner as if the owner is Nelson (male) or Boudicca (female) or insert the heroic figure of your choice.
9. Temperament – the dog must display a number of annoying terrier–like habits (there are a multitude to choose from). These habits are off–set by the other breed characteristics of bravery, tenacity and loyalty to the owner. The dog must keep the owner entertained, annoyed or baffled at all times.
The Breed Standard is the “ideal” standard for the JRish terrier. Many dogs, although fine animals, will not meet this rigorous ideal standard.
Other names which may be used for the breed include “Jack Russell type”, “Mostly Jack Russell”, “Part Jack Russell”, “Jack Russell Cross”, “I was told it was a Jack Russell” or “You little ****”.
If you are unsure whether your dog is a Jack Russell or JRish terrier, seek a number of different opinions and eventually you will get the answer you want.
Anyone seeking to establish the JRish Terrier as a breed recognized by the Kennel Club will be immediately expelled from the JRish Terrier Owners Club.
This extremely accurate and highly entertaining description of the JRish Terrier was written by John Howells a friend on the Jack-Russell-Terrier Forum
