The Shepherdess and the Chimney Sweep

~ Jiri Trnka~ Czechoslovakian~ Children's Book Illustrator, Puppeteer, Film Animator/Producer/Director~ b. in Pilsen, West Bohemia, attended vocational school in his home town, where he met 'Josef Scupa' who became a world class puppeteer. He was a mentor to Jiri Trnka and encouraged him to attend the prestigious 'School of Applied Arts' in Prague. The two founded a puppet theater in 1938, which continued for several years. Trnka, then began a career in illustrating, eventually completing over 130 books that included, several classics from the Bros. Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, Charles Perrault and numerous Czech authors. His subsequent success and popularity led him to an animated film career. Throughout the 1940's - 1950's he wrote his own scripts and designed the sets... in 1968, he was awarded the 'Hans Christian Andersen' award by the 'International Board in Books for Young People.' He was often referred to as the 'Walt Disney of Eastern Europe'.
