There’s a story about Neil Gaiman, one of the most beloved authors among readers, that I think about every time I visit a library. As a child, Gaiman spent countless hours in his local library, devouring books and losing himself in stories. He often says libraries shaped him into the writer he is today.
Once, Gaiman shared how he stumbled upon The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien in his library. He became so engrossed in the story that he ended up reading all three volumes in a single week. That magical experience of discovering entire worlds within the pages of books stayed with him and later inspired his own storytelling.
He’s even spoken about how librarians would recommend books to him, guiding him toward the classics and sparking his imagination. It’s a beautiful reminder that libraries aren’t just places to find books, they’re where dreams begin.
