5 simple ways to use essential oils every day:
1. Neuro Associate Conditioning
Smell is a powerful sense that is not often given enough credit. Smells invoke memories, emotions and instincts.
Through a simple Neuro Associative Conditioning practice, we can consciously link feelings of peace, happiness and relaxation with a chosen smell.
To try this, keep a chosen oil at hand, and simply inhale it every time you are feeling peaceful, happy and relaxed.
Taking an essential oil bath is a positive way to invoke and associate these feelings with a healthy trigger.
2. Massage them into your skin
Each essential oil has its own unique healing properties and fragrance, and mixes are available to support healing on all levels.
Keep in mind that essential oils are extremely concentrated, so the you should not apply them directly to your skin.
Use a 2% dilution. This is approximately 12 drops of essential oil to every 30ml of organic, cold pressed carrier oil, lotion or body butter.
3. Take an essential oil bath
Run a bath of warm water and add 5 drops of essential oil or 5ml of a blend. The warm water assists the absorption of the oil.
Foot baths can help to detox the whole body. Add 4-5 drops of peppermint or cypress to a foot tub of warm water to refresh and invigorate body and mind.
Essential oils that are recommended to be avoided in a full bath include:
- Black pepper
Inhalation is an age old method for relieving congestion and soothing the respiratory tract.
- Boil 2 pints or a little over a litre of water
- Pour the hot water into a bowl and add 10 drops of essential oil
- Tap on the side of the bowl to agitate the water
- Place a towel over your head, enveloping the bowel, close your eyes and inhale the vapour for 10 minutes. Repeat during the day as necessary.
Essential oil vaporizers and fragrancers:
Safer and more efficient than using a naked flame from an essential oil burner, electric vaporizers and fragencers provide a heated dish in which to diffuse the essential oil, filling the room with a lovely aroma.
5. Use them for natural scents
You can add 2-3 drops of essential oil to cushions, pillows and other fabrics to form a light perfume that can help create a relaxing environment.
Due to their potency, many essential oils are best used under the guidance of an aromatherapist, however essential oils commonly used for relaxation and home use include:
- Roman Camomile
- Sweet Marjoram
If you have any health conditions though, it is best to consult an aromatherapist and do your own research before trying an essential oil.
