8 Incredible Homes Owned By Wealthy Authors

Forget about “starving artists” - sometimes, writing can really pay the bills. In fact, some authors have made a fortune thanks to their writing talents. And these lucky few live in enormous homes that are almost as fantastic as the great fiction that made them possible.
Let’s take a look at the places where some of the richest writers on the planet lay their heads!

Dan Brown lives in New Hampshire, but he hasn’t always resided in this giant home. After he had to install a huge fence around his old property to keep out crazed superfans, he decided to invest in these new digs. This home is apparently full of secret passageways and compartments, naturally.

E.L. James shattered records set by J.K. Rowling when she made her fortune writing the Fifty Shades of Grey series. With her newfound fortune, James moved to this West London home. It’s an elegant property that would have suited Mr. Grey well.

Stephen King grew up in Maine, and he still spends much of his time here. He owns this appropriately spooky home in Bangor, Maine. The bats on the entrance gate are a nice touch.

Stephenie Meyer lives with her family in this spectacular gated compound in Arizona. She’s got it all: a swimming pool, a basketball court, and plenty of space. The gate keeps out superfans - and vampires, of course.
 James Patterson

James Patterson keeps this spectacular mansion in the balmy tropics of Palm Beach, Florida. Patterson certainly lives in luxury, but he also gives back: he’s known for his generosity, including the extensivedonations he’s made to independent bookstores.

Nora Roberts doesn’t just own a mansion - she owns practically half the town of Boonsboro, Maryland. Roberts and her immediate family own eight properties that are worth more than $3 million altogether. The Roberts family own an inn, a bookstore, a pizza parlor, and (of course) several nice homes. The quaint inn she owns is the structure pictured above.

J.K. Rowling has lived in a couple of different mansions in Edinburgh, Scotland. This one was worth about £2 million when she bought it in the early 2000s. Rowling’s property suits her magical work: she has reportedly installed a stone summer hut that resembles Hagrid’s home in the Harry Potter books.

Danielle Steel lives in a fantastic historic mansion in San Francisco, California. San Fran locals will know why we chose a historic photo for this one: the property is now obscured by huge hedges. The infamous hedges block the beautiful architecture, but they also afford Steel some privacy.
