When Authors of Adult Literature Write for Children

It can be said that most authors primarily stick to one style of writing or one genre in their literary career. However, this is not the case with this selection of books. The authors here are all known for their works that appeal to adult readers but have also written children's books.
It may be common knowledge to some that Ian Fleming wrote a classic children's story, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, or that Margaret Atwood is just as prolific with her works for children as she is for adults. But, did you know that Mary Shelley (of Frankenstein fame) wrote a melancholy children's story about a boy who encounters a traveler who turns out to be his long-lost father? Most famously known for his epic novels (War and Peace and Anna Karenina), Leo Tolstoy was interested in children's literature and published a series of alphabet books.
Gertrude Stein, James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, Mark Twain and Virginia Woolf are just a few of the authors who wrote children's stories. Revisit your favorite author through the pages of their children's books.
