On 4th April 1903 the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway began operation.
It was one of very few local lines to be built under the Light Railways act of 1896, which encouraged growth in areas of low industry. It soon became freight only, apart from a week in August 1945 when it was used to ferry visitors to the National Eisteddfod held in the area. The line eventually closed, but in 1963 was partially reopened after a group of volunteers and enthusiasts raised money for its restoration.
